Smart Logistics Datathon 2024

Welcome to the Smart Logistics Datathon 2024

The Asian Institute of Supply Chains & Logistics (AISCL) is organising a Smart Logistics Datathon 2024 on 1-4 April. This is the third time AISCL organises a data analytics competition on a regional scale. Following the success of the two competitions themed for Global Maritime Economics “Maritime & Logistics Hackathon 2017” and “Smart City Datathon 2018” respectively, AISCL is organising a Smart Logistics Datathon 2024.

The AISCL is committed to promoting knowledge transfer in supply chain management and logistics between academia and industry and to bridge the gap between academia and industry problem-solving. Aligning with the “Action Plan on Modern Logistics Development” announced by the HKSAR Government in October 2023, the AISCL is re-launching the Datathon with an aim to attract young talents to join the industry. Technology adoption is no longer optional but is critical for the industry in optimising and streamlining supply chain processes. The application of technologies such as the IoT, big data analytics, blockchains, robotics, and artificial intelligence helps to improve the efficiency, accuracy, and sustainability of logistics operations. All of the above have shaped a “smart, innovative, high-end” facet of the modern logistics industry.

March 9, 2024 (Secondary School League)
  • Competition: April 1-4, 2024
  • Award Ceremony: April 4, 2024

Inspiring smart, new generations to think outside the box and come up with ideas is one of the best ways in developing innovative solutions. The objectives of the Smart Logistics Datathon 2024 are:

  • To encourage and stimulate the new generations to participate in modern logistics initiatives,
  • To ignite the flow of creativity on developing a smart logistics ecosystem, and
  • To promote Hong Kong’s logistics industry and showcase the latest trends and technologies to both local and overseas young talents.

Open to All Full-Time Students: Participation is open to all full-time students, including university students in Asia as well as Secondary 4 to Secondary 6 (or Grade 10 to Grade 12) students in Hong Kong.

Encouraging Cross-Disciplinary Teams: To encourage cross-disciplinary collaborations, interested student participants should form a team of two to three members, preferably from different disciplines.

Secondary School Extension: With a view to enhancing younger students’ understanding of the modern logistics industry, this year, we have extended our reach to secondary school students.

League Competitions: The student teams of (i) University League and (ii) Secondary School League are competing during the same time period within their respective leagues.

Around 15 to 20 selected teams for each League will be invited to join the Datathon.

Overseas participants will arrive and check in to the hotel on April 1 afternoon. On April 2 morning, all participating teams will attend industry workshops and/or site visits in relation to Smart Logistics. After the opening ceremony in the evening, student teams will check in to the camp and will be given several sets of transport and logistics related data.

Participating teams will be given 35 hours non-stop to understand and conduct in-depth analysis on the provided data as well as the open data published by the HKSAR Government, and then come up with innovative insights on operation, service or business models that can bring values to the logistics industry. Upon finishing the data analysis, each team will have 10 minutes to present or demonstrate their results in front of a panel of judges.

Join the exciting hands-on workshop before the Datathon in mid-March, organized by Amazon Web Services (AWS). Through this 2-3 hour session, participants can learn how to leverage AWS tools such as Amazon SageMaker Canvas for low-code/no-code machine learning, and to make evidence-based decisions using prediction techniques. This hands-on training is helpful for participating teams, helping them master data analytics tools and apply them effectively in the Datathon. Don't miss out on this opportunity to gain a competitive edge!

Each participating student will also be given USD$100 credits for utilizing AWS tools on AWS Academy to explore the given datasets during the Datathon, making learning into practice!

What is Datathon?

The Datathon is a competition where participants are given a set of data to work on within a limited time period. The output can be a new business model, a prototype of an application, or something creative. It involves programmers, designers, business analysts, etc., to build and design solutions to the problem.

What is the selection process for teams to enter the final competition?

Shortlisted teams will be asked to submit answers to a set of open-ended questions related to modern logistics within one week. Our panel of professors will select qualified teams to enter the final.

What will be the judging criteria for the competition?

At the end of the competition, each team must present its project to a panel of judges consisting of professors and senior executives from the industry. Winners will be judged based on creative use of data, methodology, business savvy, and the significance of findings and recommendations.

What if I don't have a team yet?

You may still register, and we may help match you with other registered individuals to form a team for you. For secondary school students, participants are required to form their own team, and nominations from teachers are required.

Can my team members come from other universities?

Absolutely. We also encourage team members from multi-disciplinary backgrounds.

Is there reimbursement for my travel and lodging?

For oversea students, there is a subsidy on airfare expenses. Other expenses, including transportation and lodging, will be borne by the participants.

Where can I sleep?

There will be a resting area at the venue. Participants can bring their own sleeping bags, blankets, or tents of reasonable size.

What do I need to bring?

Bring your laptops, mobile phones, chargers, power cords, extension units, type G plug adaptors, spare clothes, sleeping bags, toothbrushes and paste, jackets, and anything else you think might be useful.

Who owns my project and IP?

The team that develops the project is the owner of the project and IP. Please refer to the UNIVERSITY LEAGUE RULES or SECONDARY SCHOOL LEAGUE RULES for details.
