Welcome to the Smart Logistics Datathon 2025

The Asian Institute of Supply Chains & Logistics (AISCL) is organising the Smart Logistics Datathon 2025 on 17-19 October. This is the fourth time the AISCL organises a data analytics competition on a regional scale.

The AISCL is committed to promoting knowledge transfer in supply chain management and logistics between academia and industry and to bridge the gap between academia and industry problem-solving. Aligning with the "Action Plan on Modern Logistics Development" announced by the HKSAR Government in October 2023, the AISCL is re-launching the Datathon with an aim to attract young talents to join the industry.

Hong Kong has all along been an important regional logistics hub in Asia. The rise of smart technologies – including IoT, blockchain, autonomous systems, and artificial intelligence – has fostered innovation and enabled data-driven decision-making, transforming the logistics industry to "Smart, Innovative, High-end".

This year, a Logistics Knowledge Enhancement Workshop Series is introduced and open to ALL interested Secondary 4 to Secondary 6 (or Grade 10 to Grade 12) students in enhancing their domain knowledge and capacity in supply chain and logistics, as well as data analytics.

Inspiring smart, new generations to think outside the box and come up with ideas is one of the best ways in developing innovative solutions. The objectives of the Smart Logistics Datathon 2025 are:

  • To encourage and stimulate the new generations to participate in modern logistics initiatives,
  • To ignite the flow of creativity on developing a smart logistics ecosystem, and
  • To promote Hong Kong's logistics industry and showcase the latest trends and technologies to both local and overseas young talents.

Participation is open to all full-time students categorized into two leagues:

(i) University League: undergraduate or postgraduate students at universities in Asia; and

(ii) Secondary School League: Secondary 4 to Secondary 6 (or Grade 10 to Grade 12) students in Hong Kong. Both leagues will compete during the same time period within their respective leagues.

Team composition:

Interested student participants should form a team of two to three members. Having multi-skilled team members could be advantageous to compete within tight timeframe. Members comprising of various disciplines are therefore highly encouraged.

A maximum of twenty (20) selected teams for each League will be invited to join the Datathon.

Overseas participants will arrive and check in to the hotel on October 16 afternoon. On October 17 morning, all participating teams will attend industry workshops and site visits in relation to Smart Logistics with an aim to get inspiration on the theme. After the opening ceremony in the evening, student teams will check in to the camp and will be given several sets of transport and logistics related data.

Participating teams will be given 35 hours non-stop to understand and conduct in-depth analysis on the provided data as well as the open data published by the HKSAR Government, and then come up with innovative insights on operation, service or business models that can bring values to the logistics industry. Upon finishing the data analysis, each team will have 10 minutes to present or demonstrate their results in front of a panel of judges comprising of professors and industry experts. Winners will be judged based on creative use of data, methodology, business savvy, and the significance of findings and recommendations.

To help participants build their skills in business data analytics, a hands-on training workshop sponsored by Alibaba Cloud Academy will be offered prior to the Datathon. During this interactive 2-3 hour session, participants will learn how to leverage Alibaba Cloud's suite of tools and platforms to enhance business data analysis—including big data processing and analytics, business intelligence, and data visusation.

Alibaba Cloud's tools will be available to participants as optional resources throughout the Datathon competition, enabling them to put their new knowledge into practice!

To help secondary school students gain a deeper understanding of logistics and supply chain management, we will offer a series of workshops open to all interested local Secondary 4 to Secondary 6 (or Grade 10 to Grade 12) students. The program will include classroom learning, industry seminars, and site visits to logistics facilities.

Workshop topics include:

  • Introduction to supply chain and logistics
  • Air cargo and shipping
  • Global trade
  • E-commerce
  • Logistics technologies
  • Cloud data analytics tools and more!

The workshops are scheduled on:

  • Workshop Series I: September 20, 2025 (AM)
  • Workshop Series II: October 4, 2025 (AM)
  • Workshop Series III: October 11, 2025 (AM & PM)

Details of the workshops are available here (information will be updated). Spaces are limited—register now to secure your seat! While we welcome all local Secondary 4 to Secondary 6 (or Grade 10 to Grade 12) students joining the workshops, student teams registered for the Datathon will be given priority for workshop attendance.

What is Datathon?

The Datathon is a competition where participants are given a set of data to work on within a limited time period. The output can be a new business model, a prototype of an application, or something creative. It involves programmers, designers, business analysts, etc., to build and design solutions to the problem.

What is the selection process for teams to enter the final competition?

Interested student teams must submit responses to a set of open-ended questions related to modern logistics when registering for the Datathon. Our panel of professors will review the submissions and select teams to advance to the final round. Selection will be based on the relevance, originality, creativity, innovation, and clarity of the team's written answers. Team composition—specifically, diversity of skills and disciplines—will also be an important factor in the evaluation.

What will be the judging criteria for the competition?

At the end of the competition, each team must present its project to a panel of judges consisting of professors and senior executives from the industry. Winners will be judged based on creative use of data, methodology, business savvy, and the significance of findings and recommendations.

What if I don't have a team yet?

You may still register, and we may help match you with other registered individuals to form a team for you. For secondary school students, participants are required to form their own team, and nominations from teachers are required.

Can my team members come from other universities?

Absolutely. We also encourage team members from multi-disciplinary backgrounds.

Is there reimbursement for my travel and lodging?

Overseas students will be provided with one night of hotel accommodation on October 16, 2025. In addition, a partial subsidy for airfare expenses is available, depending on the home university's location. This subsidy will be reimbursed to participants on-site upon completion of the Datathon competition. All other expenses, including local transportation and additional lodging, will be borne by the participants.

Where can I sleep?

There will be a resting area at the venue. Participants can bring their own sleeping bags, blankets, or tents of reasonable size.

What do I need to bring?

Bring your laptops, mobile phones, chargers, power cords, extension units, type G plug adaptors, spare clothes, sleeping bags, toothbrushes and paste, jackets, and anything else you think might be useful.

Who owns my project and IP?

The team that develops the project is the owner of the project and IP. Please refer to the UNIVERSITY LEAGUE RULES or SECONDARY SCHOOL LEAGUE RULES for details.
